SALINAS, Calif - A new state-wide campaign to fight childhood obesity hits Central Coast schools.
According to the California Health and Human Services Agency, approximately one in three children in California is obese or overweight.
Also, almost 40 percent of school-aged children are physically unfit, especially those who live in low-income communities or who do not have the resources to lead healthy lives.
At Fremont School in Salinas, students will take part in the "Live like a Champion" tour on Friday. It's being put on by the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as well as the Anthem Blue Cross of California.
The goal is to teach kids how important healthy eating and physical activities are in their lives now and in the future. The tour brings interactive games and challenging sports themed activities to help children bring out their "inner champion."
Celebrity athletes, including Misty May and Jerry Rice, are lending their support to the tour to raise awareness.
The tour is traveling to local community and special events, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs and after school program locations in 10 cities throughout the state. This weekend, the tour will be at the Big Sur Marathon.
