Fort Ord Prescribed Burn Canceled

Posted: Updated: Oct 23, 2008 12:16 AM PDT

FORT ORD, Calif.- Late Thursday afternoon The Ford Ord BRAC Field Office canceled all burning for the rest of the week in two areas of the former Fort Ord area. The first burn was expected to take place in the Southwest corner of the Former Fort Ord near Gen. Jim Moore Boulevard.  The Second burn will take place near Eucalyptus Road.

Public Relations Officials with the Presidio of Monterey say weather conditions caused the delay. According to the National Weather Service, winds are expected to gust up to 15-20 mph today. Temperatures are also expected to be hot today with low humidity.

All roads, previously closed because of the prescribed burn, are now back open. That includes Gen. Jim Moore Boulevard from Coe Avenue to Canyon Del Rey, Eucalyptus and Barloy Roads. Officials say the prescribed burn could take place Friday, weather permitting.

These prescribed burns are a way to wipe out munitions and explosives left over by the Army. During the duration of the burn, Gen. Jim Moore Boulevard from Coe Avenue to Canyon Del Rey, Eucalyptus and Barloy Roads will be closed.  People who want to receive updates on the burn can call 1-800-852-9699.

While officials at the Fort Ord Environmental Cleanup say they will only start the fire only if weather conditions are perfect, some residents in the area are skeptical.  They say they are afraid this fire could get out of control just like the prescribed burn of 2003.

If you're concerned about the smoke, you're advised to avoid strenuous work or exercise outdoors, to close all windows and doors in your home and to drink plenty of fluids to keep your respiratory membranes moist.  And if people have difficulty breathing, they should seek medical attention immediately.
