Temp Jobs Jump As Unemployment Rate Soars

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - New unemployment numbers show nearly one in every five  living on the Central Coast are without a job. However, according to a local temp agency, temporary positions are on the rise.

"Because businesses are unsure if an open full-time position is going to be hired on a permanent level, they're coming to Manpower and saying, 'I've got this project and hopefully if it continues we can hire this person onto our regular payroll,'" said Carol De Leon, Branch Manager of Manpower, a temporary staffing agency in Salinas.

According to De Leon, many local businesses still need support positions. However, instead of opening them up full-time  immediately, they're taking a cautionary approach by hiring on a temporary-basis.

"The phones are ringing more and we've been getting quite a few calls and job orders in terms of clerical positions, collection positions, accounting positions, and receptionist positions," said De Leon.

In addition, according to new government statistics, new temp jobs increased by nearly 50,000 nationwide over the past month. Many temp agencies are also reporting as much as 30% of their temp workers eventually get hired full-time by their clients.
