Local Man Talks About Daring Rescue

Posted: Updated:

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif.- Nearly two weeks after two fishermen were rescued from the chilly and rough waters of the Monterey Bay, Pacific Grove resident Ron Curry still has the scratches to show from it.

Curry and his two golfing friends were on the 18th tee at the Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course on the morning of Nov. 8 when they saw a small aluminum boat capsize in some huge waves near the shore. Curry said he and his friends watched as two fishermen on board the boat disappeared under the waters. Without thinking twice, Curry said he and one of his golfing friends, Hal Leach, ran down to the water.

"Yeah, we were wearing our golf shorts and golfing shoes," said Curry.

Curry said they heard one of the fishermen screaming for help. Curry said they immediately jumped into the water and grabbed the guy's life jacket with both hands and pulled him out. Curry said the fisherman was in bad shape with a big bump on his head.

"I can't imagine what they were going through," said Curry. "If there weren't two of us helping, I don't know what would have happened."

Rescue crews arrived shortly after and rescued the other fisherman stranded on the rocky island offshore. Their battered boat was pulled up to dry land.

Curry said he would do it again if he had to and said he hopes anyone else would have done the same thing.
