SALINAS, Calif.- Just weeks ago both sides of Measure K wouldn't even meet face to face for a debate in our Central Coast studios, but Tuesday night, they stood side by side before Salinas City Council to present their plan to balance the city budget.
Steve Ish from the Yes camp and Brett Landon from the No camp say they have the same goal in mind: making public safety the number one priority while balancing the budget.
Their plan is to create the "Blue Ribbon Committee" a neutral, independent group from the private sector and unions to help balance the 8 million dollar defeicit the city is facing.
The committee looks to the new Operation Ceasfire as a perfect example of a program that needs to be kept around longer than what the state grant money will allow.
After meeting upon meeting with law enforcement from all over the state and country, Salinas Police took their first steps under Operation Ceasefire, Monday.
Known gang members were invited to city hall for their first "call-in" meeting with the gang task force, probation, federal agencies and local resource groups as a plea to stop the gang violence.
About 10 gang members showed up to the meeting. The next call-in meeting is scheduled for next month, but no time or place will be announced to the public.
The Blue Ribbion Committee hopes to get their item put on next week's city council agenda.
