Road Closure information for the Big Sur Half Marathon

The seventh presentation of the Big Sur Half Marathon on Monterey Bay will be held in both Monterey and Pacific Grove on Sunday, November 15, 2009. The following information pertains to street closures in the City of Monterey only.

Traffic and parking in Downtown Monterey and the Cannery Row/New Monterey areas will be impacted between 2 AM and 10:30 AM on November 15th. Many streets will be posted "No parking, tow away" in the event area. 

  • Starting at 4:00 AM, many City streets and the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail will be closed to facilitate the running of the half marathon.
  • Traffic delays should be expected between 4:00 and 10:30 AM in downtown and Cannery Row / New Monterey.
  • The Lighthouse Tunnel, both directions, will be closed from approximately 6:00 to 8:30 AM. Access to New Monterey/Cannery Row will be via Hwy. 1 and Hwy 68 and access to downtown from New Monterey/Cannery Row will be via Lighthouse Avenue and the Pacific Street southbound extension.

 

Participants and spectators are encouraged to carpool and arrive early. 

For participants, waterfront parking lots and the downtown Custom House Garages are accessible until 6:20 AM. To access Downtown Monterey the morning of Nov. 15th, take either the Fremont Street or Munras Avenue exits off Hwy. 1 and continue to Abrego Street which turns into Washington Street. Just follow the signs to the parking facilities.

Major Street Closures:

  • The southbound Hwy. 1 Del Monte Avenue and Casa Verde Way exits will be closed from 4:00 to 9:00 AM.
  • Del Monte between El Estero and Figueroa and the entrance to Wharf #2 at Figueroa will be closed from approximately 4:00 to 8:30 AM.
  • Del Monte Avenue from Sloat to El Estero will be closed from approximately 6:00 to 8:30 AM.
  • Del Monte from Figueroa and through the northbound Lighthouse Tunnel (going to New Monterey) will be closed from approximately 6:00 to 8:30 AM. During this time, access to New Monterey and Pacific Grove will be via Hwy 1 and Hwy 68 only.
  • Lighthouse Avenue and Pacific Street southbound (from New Monterey and Pacific Grove to Downtown Monterey) will remain open. 
  • The Southbound bore of the Lighthouse Tunnel (going towards Monterey) will be closed from approximately 6:00 to 8:30 AM.
  • Those who reside or work in the area bordered by Aguajito, Del Monte, Pearl and Alvarado will be allowed limited access (ingress and egress) to the area by vehicle up until 6:00 AM via Fremont and Abrego. From 6:00 to 8:00 AM  no vehicle access will be permitted.

Start Line on Del Monte Avenue near Camino El Estero – east (toward Seaside) on Del Monte- right on Aguajito to Pearl – right on Pearl to Alvarado – right on Alvarado to Franklin- right on Franklin to Washington – left on Washington to Del Monte – west (toward Pacific Grove) on Del Monte and through the Lighthouse Tunnel onto Lighthouse Curve – Lighthouse Curve to Foam Street – right on Foam to Drake – right on Drake to Cannery Row – left on Cannery Row to David – right on David to Ocean View Boulevard- Pacific Grove portion of the course – right on Ocean View to Fountain Avenue – left on Fountain to Lighthouse Avenue – right on Lighthouse to Congress/Central – right on Central to 17th Street – left on 17th Street to Oceanview – Oceanview/Sunset to Asilomar area – turnaround at Asilomar –-  Return via the Coastal Trail at Lovers Point to Cannery Row (David) – Back in Monterey  – left down Cannery Row and continue back to Drake – left on to the Coastal Trail at Drake Street – Coastal Trail to the Finish at the Custom House Plaza.
