SALINAS, Calif - Just before 2:45 Monday morning, Salinas Police spotted a suspicious car near North Main Street and Laurel Drive. Police discovered the car had been stolen out of Watsonville. Officers tried to pull the car over at Iris Drive, that's when a car chase began.

The driver, 24 year old Hilario Contreras, a Sureno gang member out of Watsonville ran several red lights then entered the southbound on-ramp to US 101.  After traveling on US 101 for a short distance he exited at East Market Street. After taking the off ramp Contreras hit the center median disabling the car. Contreras then started running on East Market Street. He was apprehended with the use of the Taser.

Contreras was booked into the Monterey County Jail for possession of a stolen vehicle, evading the police and gang enhancement.
