Sting Sends 28 Unlicensed Contractors to Court

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif - 28 unlicensed operators are being ordered to appear in Monterey County Superior Court on misdemeanor charges for contracting without a license, for advertising violations, and for demanding excessive down payments.

This week, The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT), along with the Monterey Police Department, conducted a sting operation in Monterey.

Contractors were invited to locations in Monterey to bid on various jobs ranging from landscaping to painting.  The operation is done to show consumers the dangers of hiring unlicensed workers, and to educate unlicensed workers about California laws.

The 28 unlicensed contractors face a maximum of six months in jail or a $1,000 fine.

By law, all contractors who perform work that totals $500 or more must be licensed by the CSLB.
