SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A real estate tracking firm says California home sales dropped 12% from July to August but the median home price only dipped slightly.
San Diego-based MDA DataQuick said Thursday that 39,811 houses and condos were sold statewide in August, down from 45,079 in July. That's still up 5% from 37,988 a year earlier.
Foreclosure homes made up 40% of existing home sales last month, the lowest percentage during the past year. In February, they accounted for 59% of existing homes sold.
The median price paid for a California home in August was $249,000, down from $250,000 in July and $301,000 a year earlier.
Dataquick also reports that the median home price in the San Francisco Bay area fell by 9% as the number of homes sold in the nine-county region dropped 14%.
