Monterey, Calif- It is nothing new. Each year Monterey Police Officers are out in full force on the beach fronts and Cannery Row, to ensure the public's safety on the 4th of July. But this Independence Day they have their hands full.
"We have had the fireworks display in the past and tens of thousands of people at the beach this year we don't know what is going to happen at the beach but we have MotoGP in town which is the first year both have considered with those two major events those are two of the biggest work days all happening in one day" says Monterey Police Lieutenant Leslie Sonne.
On top of all that officers are busy keeping their eyes and ears open for fireworks. The city has a zero tolerance for any type of fireworks. Lieutenant Sonne says that authorities are worried that since the fireworks show is canceled this year that people will try to create their own.
"We have made a couple of arrest. People who have been found in possession of illegal fireworks."
For the past fifteen years James Moreno of San Jose has come to Monterey to celebrate the fourth on the beach. He says that it will not be the same without the fireworks show, but with or without a show James will continue to bring his family year after year to spend quality time together.
"We'll miss the show I wouldn't have a problem paying for something like that. It's just so sad to see the economy is so bad they can't afford the show for the community."
Sara Howard and her family drove from Modesto in order to escape the weather. As they made their way to the sandy shores of Monterey they had no clue that there would not be a fireworks show, they thought it was a little odd but didn't mind because it was not on their list of priorities.
"It's like a 103 degrees in Modesto California. We came to beat the heat and take my daughters to have fun in the sun."
