An elderly Hayward woman was killed in a house fire early Friday morning. Authorities say a Hayward couple living in the home awakened to the smell of smoke and saw flames in a front bedroom this morning. They grabbed a fire extinguisher, but said it failed to work. The two managed to escape, but a wheelchair bound Aunt also living in the home was trapped in a bedroom. Firefighters had to fight their way through the flames to rescue the woman. They carried her outside and performed CPR but were unable to save here. They found multiple appliances plugged into an outlet which may have caused the fire. Several animals died in the fire and there are doves, pigeons and ducks in the backyard that will survive. The husband is being treated in a Bay Area hospital for chest pain. The family is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
